How we choose & review products
Every recommendation on PetEssentialist follows the same breed-first methodology. This page explains exactly how products earn a spot in our guides — and what can never buy one.
Breed-first, not product-first
We maintain a structured database of every breed we cover: adult size and weight range, coat type, shedding level, energy level, temperament, and documented health predispositions. Recommendations start from those attributes — an orthopedic bed earns its place on a Great Dane guide because giant breeds carry elevated joint-disease risk, not because it's a popular bed. If a product doesn't fit the breed, it doesn't appear, no matter how well it sells.
Our selection criteria
- Breed fit: sizing, strength, coat, and health match for the specific breed the guide covers.
- Track record: established products from reputable brands with consistent owner feedback and availability.
- Materials & safety:choke-safe sizing, non-toxic materials, and construction that stands up to the breed's strength and habits.
- Honest trade-offs: every pick lists cons alongside pros. No product is right for every pet, and we say so.
What commissions do — and don't — influence
PetEssentialist is reader-supported: when you buy through our links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you (see our affiliate disclosure). Commissions keep the site free — but they never decide rankings. We do not accept payment for placement, we do not let partners preview or edit guides, and a higher commission never moves a product up a list.
Keeping guides current
Each guide shows its last-updated date. We periodically re-review picks for availability and fit, and our link system lets us correct or replace a recommendation across the site immediately when something changes.
Where we draw the line
We are not veterinarians, and our content is never medical advice. Breed health notes describe documented predispositions to help you shop (and plan) smarter — for any health concern, consult a licensed veterinarian.
